Summary — 3 things to remember
  1. The announced 2027 COLA is 3.6%. The Social Security Administration says the adjustment applies to next year’s benefits.
  2. Social Security and SSI follow different schedules. Social Security benefits use the January 2027 payment cycle; the January SSI payment is expected early, on December 31, 2026.
  3. A 3.6% adjustment is not the same dollar amount for everyone. Check your own Social Security notice for the amount tied to your record.

What is the COLA?

The Social Security Administration, or SSA, announced the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment on October 14, 2026. The COLA is an annual adjustment to certain Social Security and Supplemental Security Income benefits.

The announcement matters to people receiving retirement, survivor, or disability benefits, as well as people receiving SSI. SSI is a needs-based program for people who meet the program’s income, resource, and other requirements.

The 3.6% figure is an adjustment rate, not a flat amount added to every account. People start with different benefit amounts, so their adjusted amounts differ too.

When does the change take effect?

According to SSA’s announcement, Social Security benefits at the new rate begin with the January 2027 payment cycle. The exact payment date during the month depends on each person’s record.

The January 2027 SSI payment is expected early, on December 31, 2026, because New Year’s Day is a federal holiday. An early deposit does not mean a second increase for December.

The schedules differ because Social Security and SSI do not use the same payment calendar. Check your own letter or online account instead of relying on another person’s deposit date.

Where can you check your amount?

You can sign in to my Social Security to review information for your record. SSA’s notice is the place to confirm your individual amount after the adjustment.

The general percentage does not show the amount deposited after deductions. This article does not estimate anyone’s personal increase or calculate how premiums and other deductions affect a deposit.

The public announcement describes how the adjustment applies by program. Only an individual record can show a person’s own amount.
